Lexi met up with Kiara at the mall again, it was looking as if this might become their main place to hang out. Lexi explained the situation the best she could to her friend. So… not very well. She had to omit basically every important detail, from the gender swap to becoming her wife's daughter. But even still, she got her main frustrations across. It brought to Lexi's mind the actual permanence of her situation. She was living life as if she would change back someday but… the way things were going, she was going to be a girl the rest of her life. There wasn’t any way for her to become a man again. Did she even want to? Was it time she accepted who she was now? That her and Karen's relationship was that of a parent and her child? Karen certainly seemed to have come to that conclusion… was that what Lexi wanted? To grow up with her sister, Bea, and their Mom? There was a lot to process about this whole ordeal. In any case, Kiara processed what she shared as they sat across from each other drinking boba. The sight reminded Lexi of how much had changed since she woke up as a girl.
“So… you don't like that your Mom suddenly brought this guy over. You feel like you are being… replaced?” Lexi nodded, letting Kiara continue. “Hmm… I think I get that, when my Mom and Stepdad started dating I was worried he would take her attention away from me.”
“Oh, well, they aren't dating.” Lexi snapped straight to asserting that they wouldn’t be a thing, but Kiara sarcastically nodded her head.
“Uh-huh. If you didn't think they were going to date you wouldn't have come to me with this, would you?” That was… a possibility. Of course, Lexi didn’t think Karen intended to enter a relationship with him anytime soon, but deep down… she was worried about the idea. So she had a point.
“Ok, fair point. Anyway, I feel the same way you did I think, yeah.” Lexi played with her hair as she thought about what Kiara said… Stepdad, huh?
“Right, well… I know it’s tough but I can tell you this. These days I realize my Mom has more than enough love in her heart for me and Dad. And yours is the same, I’m sure! She should be allowed to get to know people her own age… she’ll never hold them above you and your sister though I’m sure. Just give him a chance, for me?” Kiara then beamed at Lexi, as if to reassure her everything would be okay. She didn’t understand everything, but her heart was in the right place.
“Ugh… okay.” Lexi conceded.
“And that other thing you said about your Mom thinking you were… “happy” with things right now?” Kiara circled back to something else Lexi had said when she was trying to convey her frustrations with Karen thinking she liked being this way.
“Yeah! Can you believe that? She doesn’t know me.” Lexi was happy to move back into expressing her angst towards her mother, only to be disappointed as Kiara transitioned to another point.
“Well… aren’t you? Aren’t you happy?” Kiara looked her friend up and down, as she wore bright colors, excitedly expressing herself and drinking a sweet drink.
“Wha- what do you mean?” Lexi asked. How could she be happy with her messed up situation?
“So… from my point of view, you seem pretty happy. You’re smiling and laughing with your sister when you show up to school, and you’re always dressed and styled well. Everyone likes you, and you’re always happy when we meet new people… you’re doing well in school, and I can tell you really care about your Mom’s well-being… I mean, that’s what this is about right? We have a lot of fun when we hang out… even right now. Aren’t you happy?” When she had it spelled out for her for the second time, Lexi was forced to confront the reality of things.
“Maybe you’re right…”
