Without Words
Alan had been unable to speak ever since he was diagnosed with second puberty. Everyone who got it coped with the diagnosis differently, but even so, the way Alan reacted was well out of the ordinary. When he opened his mouth and heard a voice in the early stages of womanhood come out, he never spoke again. At first, it was voluntary, but as time went on, it became an unbreakable coping mechanism. But like any other victim, whether Alan wanted to become a woman or not though, second puberty was going to happen, and it did.
Adjusting was difficult for Lara, naturally. In a very turbulent time in any young girl’s life, she had to adjust to a sex change, being the new girl, and even worse being mute all the while. But, luckily enough, she had some people who were willing to accept her, differences and all. As a result, she slowly became comfortable in her new skin, accepting that Lara was here to stay (for a few reasons!) and she liked it that way! But even after all that, she never recovered from her self-induced mutism, or pretty extreme shyness at times.
“Hey, you busy later today?” Adam, a guy she went to school with came up to her, and Lara signed “no.” She and the people around her had learned a few basic phrases in sign language, it actually meant a lot when someone went through all that effort for her. Aside from that though, Lara's sketchbook had become a big part of how she expressed herself. It was how she spoke most of the time, and conveyed how she was feeling. “Great! Wanna go out together?” Lara practically lost her balance from the shock of what he said. Go out? Did he mean like… a date? No, surely not. She had just felt… odd since she changed. An attraction towards Alex she feels she wouldn't have had before. Although she always pushed it to the back of her mind as just her being grateful to have a friend. “Sure.” She signed.
“Alright, it's a date!” Lara hid behind her sketchbook. Was it a date?! She hid her face while writing something out, ironically still showing her emotion on the other side.
“Like, a date date?” is what it read.
“Well, yeah. Or well, that's what I meant. No pressure on you though, I totally get it.” Lara began to write, “I…” but paused soon after. At what point did she become attracted to men like this? Before changing, or after? Was Adam the one to change her mind? In retrospect it was obvious that it rested deep inside her for some time, was she more comfortable with it now being a woman? Regardless, only one response came to mind for her, it was time to overcome a large nervous hurdle.
“I'd love to. <3” As the two of them read what she wrote in pink curly text, with a heart to cap it all off (easily the most feminine thing Lara had done in, well, ever.) The two's faces grew flush.
“Oh, uh, good! Great, even. Well, I'm excited about our date, and I hope you are too. See you in a little bit!” And with that she watched him walk off to his next class, although the two of them would hardly be able to focus on school while thinking about one another.
“Yeah…”
