A New Daughter (Part 5)
Lexi hummed as she walked up to her home in her new outfit, carrying a bag with all the rest of them. She was excited to share what she got, and had spent the day doing.
"I'm home!" Lexi greeted Bea as she walked through the door. "Where's Karen?"
"Ah, she's... in the living room." Bea apprehensive directed her "sister's" gaze to the room on her left. In which she saw Karen talking and laughing to... some brown haired tall guy.
"Oh." It didn't take very long for her joyful demeanor to be flattened. What was he doing here? Who was he? It wasn't anyone Lexi recognized. She knew Karen's extended family, and it wasn't any of their neighbors. Must be someone who knew Karen from a long time ago? It could also be someone from Swap Co. checking up on them... but that was unlikely. Most of their correspondence was purely digital. They were actually pretty hands off in Lexi's case, not that she could blame them.
"Ah, Lexi, welcome home sweetheart, come here!" Lexi apprehensively made her way in and sat next to her... "Mom" "This is Darren, an old friend of mine! The two of us have been catching up." She seemed happy and more than willing to show him off to Lexi, maybe it wasn't a big deal? Just some guy. Whatever. It really wasn't a big deal Lexi still didn't really know how to interact with him though, did he know her situation? Or...
"You must be Lexi! Your mother has been telling me all about you and your sister. You girls sound like quite the fun pairing." Darren tried to break the ice with the seemingly shy girl, who was actually just at a loss for words.
"Yeah..."
"Say, why don't you and I spend some time together? I'm sure we would get along!" Hang out with this guy? What for?
"Oh, that sounds great! My daughters will just love you. What do you say Lexi?" Karen was much too receptive to the idea. What was her game?
"Ah- uhh..."
"She's a little shy. I'll let you know later, I'm sure we'll be seeing you again!" Karen wrapped up her discussion with Darren as he made his way out. The mood was lightened a bit as Lexi gushed to Bea and Karen about what a good day she had, leading to them arranging a time for them to really teach Lexi the joys of doing her makeup and her nails. But she couldn't help but wonder what had just happened as she tried to go to sleep later that night.
